UNTETHERED BY THE SUN
UNTETHERED BY THE SUN + Pushing the limits in clay, this series is a study which tests the boundaries of tolerance like one is shaped and tangled by everyday life.
The figures appear unwound, as if beyond mortal coil like a mollusk out of her shell, her vulnerability is revealed and unhinged. Arresting and simultaneously drawing in all that is tactile, Smith forms deep impressions into all that is physical, personal and intimate. Smith likens a parallel to the physical stress and tension forced onto the soul with the morphological effects of the psychological forced onto the clay itself.
Through impressions molded into the clay by Elizabeth’s hands, she explores and channels a deeply personal experience into form.
