VENICE BEACH HOUSE

As an artist, Elizabeth has drawn inspiration from birds quite often in her work. From a macro look into a bird's beak bone structure to the poetry of flight in her sound work, the significance of nature is presented throughout most of her work. Elizabeth’s Venice Vortex Home was built in 1927 (purchased the property in 2016) and resembles circular breathing, there is a natural vertical flow throughout the house where rooms flow from one to the next, connecting and continuing momentum with specifically sourced materials and detailing.

Throughout the house materials are repeated and carry through connecting spaces for a meandering experience evoking warmth, and an intimacy similar to a well-crafted captain’s quarters. The implementation of vortices are located, intuitively, where Elizabeth sensed a collection of energy and she echoed that movement working with the houses naturals veining to call attention to the vortex - mapping of the materials and flipping the orientation rather than using contrast to tell the story, Elizabeth relied on subtleties, like a quiet breath cycle. By creating these visual vortexes, Elizabeth was articulating that energy much like a bird manipulates their wing tips to create a vortex to create an elegant form of flight.

This led Elizabeth and her husband Christopher to renovate with preservation in mind - ensuring to safeguard coastal character, retain scales of intimacy and functionally what they felt was needed for this haven: warmth, intimacy, nurturing and natural building materials...true California sourced stones versus vacuous spaces, impersonal and cold hard concrete finishes.
